Choosing a web designer in Oxfordshire: what to look for (and what to avoid)

Not all web designers are equal. Here's how to evaluate agencies and freelancers in Oxfordshire before you hand over any money.

Oxfordshire has plenty of web designers and agencies to choose from. Finding the right one means asking the right questions before you commit. Here's what we've seen go wrong — and how to avoid it.

Red flag 1: No clear process or timeline

A professional web designer should be able to tell you exactly what happens when, who is responsible at each stage, and when your site goes live. If the answer is vague — "a few weeks, depends" — that's a warning sign. Our process is explicit: discovery call, wireframe, design approval, build, review, launch. Five to ten working days for most projects.

Red flag 2: No portfolio or local work

Ask to see live websites they've built. If they can't point you to five or more real sites, that's a problem. Also check whether the sites are fast (use Google PageSpeed Insights), mobile-friendly, and professionally designed — not just what they look like on a laptop screenshot.

Red flag 3: Locking you into their platform

Some designers host your site through their own reseller account — meaning if you ever want to leave, you lose the site or face a large migration fee. Always ask: "Do I own the code and domain?" and "Can I take the site elsewhere without starting from scratch?" The answer should be an unconditional yes.

Questions to ask any web designer before hiring

How long will the project take? What's included in the price (copywriting, images, SEO setup)? Who will do the work — is it in-house or outsourced? What happens if I need changes after launch? Do I own everything once the project is complete? Any good agency should answer all of these clearly, without hesitation.
