Does your small business actually need a website in 2025?

What social media and Google My Business can't do
Instagram shows your work to people who already follow you. Google My Business helps you appear in map results. Neither can rank for the specific search terms your customers use, explain your pricing, show case studies, collect enquiries via a form, or convert a sceptical visitor into a lead with a well-structured page. A website does all of this — around the clock, without you posting content.
The trust signal problem
When a prospective customer hears about your business and Googles you, what do they find? If the answer is "nothing" or "just a Facebook page," a significant number will move on to someone who looks more established. A professional website — even a simple five-page one — signals that you're serious about your business.
When you probably don't need a website (yet)
If you're in the very early stages — testing whether a business idea has legs, before you have any customers — a website is premature. Get your first three customers by word of mouth, refine what you offer, then invest in a site that reflects a real business. Building a website before you know your message is putting the cart before the horse.
When you definitely need a website
You need a website if: you want Google to send you leads, you sell services (not just products), you want customers to be able to find you at 11pm when they've just had an emergency plumbing issue, or you want to look more credible than your competitors. For most UK small businesses, the answer is: yes, you need one — and it costs less than you think.
